INSTRUCTIONS:

OPERATING THE WEBSITE:

1. Using this website is not difficult; most users will not need the description and instructions that follow. The website is composed of two series of pages. One series holds up to nine "thumbnail" images, and the other is dedicated to showing only one image at a time -- the so-called enlargement page. There are sixteen pages of thumbnail images and 143 "enlargement" pages. On the top of each thumbnail page are arrows that enable you to use your mouse to select either the previous or the next page of thumbnails. In addition, clicking your mouse on any single thumbnail brings up the page that shows an enlarged version of the thumbnail chosen.

2. With the "enlargement" page showing, you may 1) click the up-arrow at its top to call the corresponding "thumbnail" page, 2) select either the left-pointing or right-pointing arrows to move to the previous or next image, respectively, or 3) click on the image itself to move to the next image.

3. Below each enlargement is a series of numbers running from 1 through 143. These numbers represent sequentially each image in the series. You may click on any number in any sequence to see the corresponding image. Note that the active image is identified in this series by its number turning to the color white. Use these if you wish to return to images out of sequence. Simply record the numbers of the images that interest you and click their corresponding place in the numerical series when you are ready.

note: If the image pages are too large for your browser's window, and you use a PC, try pressing F/11 to reduce the space the browser machinery occupies and enlarge the resultant window. Sorry, MAC people; I can't help here.

USING THE DATA:

1. The header of each "thumbnail" and each "enlargement" page contains this author's website address (http://www.studiolo.org) and his email address: . In addition, the link to "HOME" returns the user to this page.

2. Under each thumbnail is the filename that designates the "enlarged" file that will be called when the thumbnail is selected. Under each "enlarged" image is the same filename, plus a title that represents my best guess at identifying those individuals depicted and the spelling of their names. In addition, when I knew a person depicted is a published author, I included an Amazon.com link to one of their books. (By clicking in Amazon on the highlighted name of the author, you can obtain Amazon's complete list of their books.)

Viewers are encouraged to send in corrections for errors they discover.

3. Note that the filename indicates the date and time each images was taken, in this form: "year, month, day, hour, minute, second." The pictures are shown in exact chronological order.

IMAGE SELECTION:

1. Undoubtedly viewers will note that some individuals, in particular those giving presentations are represented multiple times. The purpose of this technique is to offer an array of expressions and gestures symptomatic of the speaker and representative of their presentation styles. I view this technique as a kind of cinema, which, instead of presenting character in a series of fleeting moments, invites the observer to choose his or her own rate of observation. In addition, it offers viewers and the subjects a variety of images from which to choose, should they wish to keep any of the images.

2. Other techniques were used to prevent background activities from interfering with images of less animated presenters.

PERMISSIONS:

1. Each image is the copyrighted work of the photographer (Robert A. Baron) and may not be used for for-profit or commercial purposes without his expressed permission. For commercial applications, users are urged to call for the high-resolution versions of the images shown. The easiest way to request images is to supply the full filename, as identified in the website. Commercial images can be supplied with minimal compression and in sizes up to 2000x3000pixels.

2. The above notwithstanding, users are invited to use, copy, exchange, publish, etc., both the "thumbnail" images and the "enlarged" images for their personal, non-profit, non-commercial use. The only requirement is that all "published" images, be they on the web or in print, must bear a credit line that reads as follows: (c) 2005, Robert A. Baron - http://www.studiolo.net/pix/. In such cases, the user assumes all responsibility concerning copyright infractions and for misuse of right of personality. The thumbnails measure 175 pixels along their longest edge, and the enlarged versions measure 640 pixels along their longest edge. Both thumbnails and enlarged images have been compressed to Photoshop jpeg level three, which makes them small enough for quick display on the web, but too highly compressed to be of much use for publications.

3. Access. The URL address of this website is being distributed by email; it is not linked to the author's website. This means that unless someone else adds a link to their own website, it will not be indexed by Google and other indexing utilities.

4. CD-ROMs of this website can be ordered. I haven't figured out how much should be charged for this. Suggestions are welcome.

Viewers are encouraged to distribute the address of this website to their Harpur colleagues and fellow reunion attendees; but, to respect the privacy of those depicted. They are requested not add the address to their personal and public websites.

ALUMNI CONTRABUTIONS:

Tom Friedman: Songs of Occasion 1) Harpur 40th Reunion Blues, 2) I'm Old.

VIEWER COMMENTS:

Jeannette Lasansky:
...I was sorry to miss an event that had been a while in the planning but many have written of their shared enthusiasm and that makes up in a small way for missing it. Sharing is what it is all about and I guess, in part, supporting the institution that brought us together and nurtured us in those formative times. Thanks for taking so many photos and sharing them in this way. Howie Verb had sent them on earlier.

Deborah Tannen:
Robert, I loved the photos, which I just now found a moment to view. They're great. I hated having missed the group photo. Had it only been taken on Saturday instead of Sunday.
I'm already looking forward to the reunion we'll have in 5 years. When I tell people how much I loved my college reunion, they are incredulous. It was such a special place, such special people, starting with you. Love, Deb
PS I'll be spekaing at the 92 St. Y on Mar. 26, 2006

Judi Bernstein-Baker:
"The photos are wonderful.  They capture the moods, the connections, and the interactions.  Thank you for your efforts and skill."

Tom Friedman:
Much thanks for a great job documenting the events and the people! The photos are spectacular and will be a great help as short-term memory fades with age.
I really appreciate the Roscoe Diner pix--I would have stopped there too if I hadn't flown in and out of Albany. I believe the diner has metamorphosed a bit over the decades, but what's really missing as far as I can remember is the two or three feet of black snow. I thought the season started around September 1 and ended around August 15, but maybe my recollection is off or global warming really is happening!

Barbara (Kriegsman) Espenschied:
...those are great shots------I esp. love the ones of Tom Friedman during his performance . And I also really love the one with you and Greg Abbey standing together-- a beautiful picture.

Danny Domoff:
Bob: I cannot thank you enough for all the amazing photos...it has always been folks like you and Ruth who made (make) Harpur so great.

Name Withheld:
Dear Bob, It was great seeing you and Ruth. I like the pictures a lot. Seeing us all in pictures brings tears to my eyes. You and Ruth look terrific.

Name Withheld:
Dear Bob, Excellent pictures. thanks.
corrections / info: ... And you left out an "e" in every "Abbey" and in every "Roscoe"; also the class for the reunions is 19 "sixties" not "nineties," but you knew that. [ed. wishful thinking]

Ira Bourstein:
Thank you for all the pictures. They're wonderful.

Mark Konikoff:
Thanks so much for the photos... just great. I spotted one error...

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:

Many thanks to the following for their help in identifying people photographed, for correcting the spelling of names, for correcting my errors, and for sharing their own photographs with me: Ruth (Reichek) Baron (my wife, who also served as general photo editor. -- That's why there are only 150 photos.), Barbara (Kriegsman) Espenschied (who distributed the address of these images faster than the speed of spam.), Ceil Silver (who must be a professional editor, and for her "shoot-from-the-hip photos"), Carole (Goldsmith) Howard, Peter Vietze (who is working on a reunion video), Gregory Abbey (not Abby, but perhaps Abba), Ira Bourstein, Howie Verb, Danny Domoff (for being there), Tom Friedman (for sending his revealing photos), Alan Goldsmith (for even more corrections!), Mark Konikoff for spotting just one error ...
