| "Gioconda
2001" is the creation of David Teixidor, a
Barcelona illustrator who describes himself as a
"Science Fiction Artist." Since 1987 he as
been employed in the publicity and editorial industry
specializing in illustrations and photographic
retouching. The artist sees this work as a tribute to one of his favorites films: Stanley Kubrick's "2001: a Space Odyssey". Even, today, he says, thirty years after it appeared, this film can be admired without any diminishment of its sense of wonder and appreciated for the manner in which it defines time as a frontier. Taking the concept of historical time
as its symbol, in this work the artist explored the
metaphor by mixing another eternal and ethereal icon:
Leonardo's Gioconda. The image was produced digitally,
using mixing, retouching and 3-D programs. The original
design of the space-suit (created by Harry Lange for the
Kubrick film) was subtly altered by adding elements of La
Gioconda's dress. It took two weeks to finish the
illustration. This year this work was selected to be
included in Spectrum, the prestigious annual of
Fantastic Art.. edit: 11/30/2004 |
