To the Reader

The following survey and discussion of "monalisiana" is presented for the delight, amusement and perhaps the edification of those who are interested in the infusion of the "high arts" into popular culture and for those who are curious about the expanding variety of kitsch and related images of the Mona Lisa. Begun in November 1997, this "paper" is under constant revision, and is edited and augmented at irregular intervals. People who wish to follow the course of this project may wish to check in to see what is new every three or four months. At this moment, no record of previous versions is being maintained. This means that anyone wishing to cite this paper is best advised to keep reference copies of the version they have cited. However it is possible to find out what new works have been added since your last visit. New works are generally added sequentially to the list at the end of the text and are dated. This list documents the chronological sequence of additions and contains links to the relevant portions of the text for each image. Changes made to the text portions alone are not documented, except by the dated links at the head of this page. Suggestions on how best to document the evolving text are welcome. Please send these to the author. This paper is © by Robert A. Baron, 1997-2002. Underlying objects and images should be considered as copyrighted by their makers or publishers; they appear here under claim of fair use as defined by U.S.Copyright code, section 107.

During April 2002 much of this site was re-set, with the addition of images integrated into the text. Most of these pictures are hot-linked to the full-page illustration sets. These often contain useful comparisons and study topics that include images not discussed in the main text, plus discussions on short topics -- such as the pregnant Mona Lisa.. The way hot-links work has been changed too. Now, when you are in the text portion (filenames: MONASV*.htm) the first time you click on a hot picture or a hypertext element a new browser window will open. Unless you close it, that window will stay open and will receive the contents of every linked request. The original window will remain open with your text and will keep your place. From the second window, you can browse through additional images and check on cited texts, but the original window will keep your place in the reading. If you see errors in how this operates, the fault is mine. Tell me about it. /rb

Acknowledgements:
Jean-Pierre Cauvin, Professor of French, University of Texas (7/27/98) for the correct French text for the acronym LHOOQ.
Nancy Mellerski, Profesor of French, Dickenson College, Pennsylvania (6/2000) for her insightful translation from the Turkish.
Christine L. Sundt, Curator, Arts and Architecure Visual Resources Library, University of Oregon, Eugene, for finding everything Mona and (with Helene Roberts, who also provided the bamboo curtain) for publishing a paper based on these materials in Visual Resources. Paul Baron and Susan Hill, Providence, RI, for collection aids and boosterism.
Carl and Carol Selkin, Pasadena, CA, for clipping services and good humor and unflagging enthusiasm. Plus, top-notch editing.
